Dr Alma-Nalisha Cele
Dr Alma-Nalisha Cele is a medical doctor working in global public health. She has a special interest in health economics and it’s relationship to the socio-economics of health, particularly in public health.
Dr Alma-Nalisha Cele is also the co-founder of The Cheeky Natives alongside Letlhogonolo Mokgoroane.
The Cheeky Natives is a literary podcast whose primary aim is to archive black literature on the continent and diaspora through critical engagement with writers and literary audiences.
Dr Alma-Nalisha Cele is passionate about the ways in which literary representation and engagement can grow the quality of dialogue and analysis in our communities. She continually credits a strong relationship with reading and literature to her feminist, intersectional approach not only to her work in public health but also to her lived politics. She believes that in many ways books continue to change and even save people’s lives and is passionate about ensuring access to critical engagement for wide audiences.
Dr Cele is a Mandela Washington Fellow 2019 and was named a Mail and Guardian 200 young South Africa in 2019.

She is a We Are Family Foundation 2019 global teen leader, was awarded the Allan Gray Fellowship in 2020 and Golden Key membership in 2021. Amonge is also a published writer in BBC’s Rethink book with Penguin Random House UK and more recently she authored a children’s book called My Big Name with New Africa Books 2022. She is a social activist and an accomplished public speaker who has given her voice to prestigious platforms such as; Global Citizen, TEDx in her talk entitled “From Social Media to Social Impact”, Breaking Down Borders Africa, Google, UNICEF!s Voices of Youth and Black Girls Rock roundtable with former US First Lady, Michelle Obama.

Andy Kawa
Andy Kawa is an entrepreneur, director of companies and human rights activist. Over the past 10 years she has focused her energies on advocacy against gender-based violence.
She is an active member of the Africa Leadership Initiative and the Aspen Global Leadership Network. She is a keen gardener, golfer, traveller and lover of animals.

Anne Schlebusch
Like Maggie, the protagonist in her exciting debut novel for adults, Anne Schlebusch, is 70 years old.
This deft author is no stranger to writing though, having been a co-author of language textbooks and a curriculum guide. She has written 3 Young Adult novels, becoming a 1995 Joint Winner of the “Young Africa Award” with one of them. In 2020 her short story was longlisted in the Kwela Corona Competition.
After completing her MPhil in Applied Language Studies (cum laude) at UCT in 1995, Anne left teaching to join the Western Cape Education Department, and concluded her long and illustrious career with a decade as Director for Business Strategy.

Ashley Jay
Ashley Jay is a qualified Educational Psychologist with over 12 years experience in the field. She runs a private practice, is the consulting psychologist at two private schools in JHB and has been working within the private school system for 10 years. She has previously lectured psychology students at the University of the Witwatersrand and the South African College of Applied Psychology, gives professional webinars and talks and provides clinical supervision for therapists.
Ashley’s areas of interest include working with children, adolescents, young adults and parents.
Ashley is also an author and written and published a series of children books to help children understand, express and manage their emotions.

Ashti Juggath
Soon after completing her Pharmacy degree, she moved the city of Gold, Johannesburg where she currently works for a prominent Medical Aid Company.
Deciding that her thesis for her master’s degree in pharmacy and medical articles that she had written were not very entertaining, she ventured into the world of storytelling.
Subsequently she penned her debut novel, Peaches and Smeets, which was published by Modjaji Books.
On International Women’s Day this year, Ashti was the recipient of an award from the Consulate General of India in Johannesburg in recognition of her achievements.
Ashti lives in one of the delightful leafy suburbs in Johannesburg with her husband, three wonderful, children and, many books. If not reading, she plays the guitar and enjoys swimming.

Barbara Adair
She writes, and also works part time at the University of the Witwatersrand Writing Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, and in Lamu, Kenya, teaching and assisting students in critical thinking.
She previously practised as an attorney litigating on human rights issues, and thereafter taught at the Wits School of Public and Development Management.

Bryan Rostron
Bryan Rostron, born in Johannesburg and studied at Rhodes University, is the author of three novels and four non-fiction works. He has worked as a journalist in South Africa, Italy, New York and London, writing for among others The New York Times, the London Sunday Times, The Guardian, The Spectator and The New Statesman, and has written columns for the satirical magazine Private Eye and the British political weekly, Tribune.
In Rome, 1978-1980, he acted in a dozen movies, including staring in the adventure film Scorticatelli Vivi. He returned to South Africa in 1998, after an absence of 28 years has contributed to many SA newspapers. He lives in Cape Town.
His books include Till Babylon Falls (Coronet, UK, 1991), a non-fiction account of Robert McBride and his MK unit, described by Mandela’s biographer Anthony Sampson as, ‘of political and historic importance.’ This was updated in 2019 as Robert McBride: the struggle continues (Tafelberg).
His novel, My Shadow (David Philip, 2004) was shortlisted for the Africa Commonwealth Prize, while his novel Black Petals (Jacana 2009) was reviewed by the Sunday Times, as ‘one of the most intelligent and satisfying South African novel in a long time.’ This was followed by a short satirical work, The Ranter’s Guide to South Africa (Jonathan Ball 2011). His most recent book is Lost on the Map: a memoir of colonial illusions (Bookstorm, 2022).

Bulelwa Mabasa
Bulelwa Mabasa is a mother of four who lives in Johannesburg. As director and head of the Land Reform, Restitution and Tenure practice at Werksmans Attorneys, her expertise is spread across commercial dispute resolution, mining litigation, mining regulation, land reform, and administrative and constitutional law. Bulelwa was appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa as the only attorney on the Presidential Expert Advisory Panel on Land Reform and Agriculture in 2018. She is the co-editor of Land in South Africa: Contested Meanings and Nation Formation (2021), the country’s leading book on land reform.

Busisekile Khumalo
She came to Johannesburg, after finishing her degree in search of a job, where she encountered the harsh conditions of fast food work. She turned to her love for writing as an escape and that led to the publication of her first book, The Harvard Wife, in December 2017 which went on to become a national bestselling novel.
Busisekile is motivated by a burning desire to tell African stories and help as many women as possible fall in love with themselves. A Zimbabwe Achievers Award nominee (2022) whose first passion is Humanitarian law, in particular Women and Children’s rights. She has also written factual work including an article on immigrant women and labour laws published in the OSISA publication, BUWA. She was a panelist in the Africa Book and Design Festival 2021 and the virtual SA Book Fair 2020, and was part of the Homebru selection in 2018 and 2020 consecutively for her books Nomaswazi and Fallen Candle.

We’re faced with an overabundance of online information every day and so-called “fake news” is only part of the problem. This session will give students the critical-thinking skills they need to make sense of the information they come across, and effectively sort fact from fiction.

Before establishing Monocle, David gained many years of diverse experience at companies within the finance and technology space. Dire Tladi
He is also a member of the UN International Law Commission, and its Special Rapporteur on Peremptory Norms. He is also a member of the Institut de Droit International, and a two-time Fulbright grant holder. He was previously a lawyer for the South African Foreign Ministry, a position that saw him serve a four-year stint as Legal Counsel for the South African Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. After leaving government service, he was retained by the Foreign Minister to serve as her Special Adviser, a position he held from 2014-2018.
Tladi, has written one other work of fiction, Blood in the Sand of Justice, which has received rave-reviews.

Eva Mazza is a resident of Stellenbosch. She studied Drama at Wits many years ago, has raised four girls and taught Drama from her home studio and at various schools. Before fifty she had set herself a goal to write a novel and a play. She wrote and staged her play just after her fiftieth birthday, and her best selling novel, ‘Sex, Lies & Stellenbosch’ was published a year later. She completed the ‘Sex, Lies‘ trilogy last year, and stand-alone, ‘Christine‘ was published during Covid. This year she plans to focus on her two last born children as they near completion of their schooling and she is excited to be a first time granny in July

This is a book with pictures that captures Xhosa food, clothes, beads, activities, ceremonies, handcrafts, nature and other cultural aspects.
She is currently enrolled at Stellenbosch for a PhD in Health Sciences, focusing on Indigenous Knowledge Health Systems.She also runs Homba Crafts, a bead and Xhosa craft making company at Bulungula, Elliotdale. The company creates opportunities for young unemployed women in the area. They incorporate traditional bead styles with modern designs. Their beaded stethoscope has gone viral beading for corporate gifting and individuals. She also has a farming business producing crops such as potatoes, cabbage, spinach, maize etc, in her family fields.

Hosia Malekane
He is married to Mokgobeng Malekane, and they have three grown up sons. Mr Malekane is involved in various community development initiatives including being secretary of KwaThema Socio Economic Organisation(KTSEO), an NGO that raises funding annually for KwaThema University students. Chairman of Imperatives Foundation. The Foundation aspires to ignite the collective of activists and survivors of gender-based prejudices and violence, steering them into being pillars of strength towards the eradication of this scourge.

Jan is a haemophiliac who acquired the HI Virus in 1985 as a result of receiving contaminated blood products. His memoir ‘Blood and Silver’ deals with living with haemophilia and specifically how he went into western Ukraine (formerly Poland) in 2019 to look for the family silver which his father buried in a forest on Jan’s grandfather’s family estate at the onset of World War II. Jan’s talk will describe his quest in 2019 to search for the family treasure that his father buried eighty years previously.

Joy Watson is a senior research associate, author and writer. Kumi Naidoo
On his return to South Africa, Kumi played a key role in the establishment of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) ahead of South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994. He took on the responsibility of training the electoral staff and served as one of the spokespersons of the IEC.
He served the adult literacy movement before taking on the role of Founding Executive Director of the South African NGO Coalition (SANGOCO), an umbrella body for non-governmental organisations. Between 1998 and 2008, Kumi was Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer of CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation, a network dedicated to strengthening civil society around the world.
In 2009, Kumi became Executive Director of Greenpeace International, the first person from the Global South to lead the organisation. His tenure is notable for his efforts to reorient environmental activism in alignment with wider global movements for economic and social justice. After stepping down from Greenpeace in 2015, Kumi directed his energies towards the establishment of the Pan-African civil society movement Africans Rising for Justice, Peace and Dignity, for whom he is still a Global Ambassador. He continues to be involved with a number of grassroots civil society organisations and movements, helping to develop a new generation of activists equipped to meet contemporary challenges.
From 2018 to 2020, Kumi was Secretary General of Amnesty International.
He now serves as Special Advisor to the Green Economy Coalition and Senior Advisor to the Community Arts Network. He is the host of the Power, People and Planet podcast where he is joined by activists, artists and community leaders who are seeking to build a more sustainable future. He is currently a visiting Fellow at Oxford University, an Honorary Fellow of Magdalen College, and Professor of Practice at Thunderbird School of Global Management, Arizona State University. I have experience working in many fields, such as stationery design, digital marketing and post production, but my real passion lies in children’s illustration and picture books.
“Little Chick goes on an adventure” is my first written and illustrated book and I can’t wait to create more adventures for her to go on!
Fun facts: When I am not busy scribbling, you can find me either in the mountains, doing yoga, befriending cats or sipping on a glass of *fermented grape juice (*wine.)

Lindile is an expert in growing businesses. He also provides this service to fortune 500 businesses by defining a bespoke growth playbook and helps them implement it to achieve a turnaround and ultimately grow. Lindile is now the Group Chief Revenue Officer of Primedia Group after being promoted from being the Chief Revenue Officer of Primedia Broadcasting. This is following the successful deployment of the Growth Playbook. Which he is now establishing across Primedia’s group of companies.
In addition to Group Chief Revenue Officer, Lindile has been granted the incredible opportunity to be the Chief Executive Officer of Primedia Broadcasting, ‘the home of great media’. A role that will see him delighting audiences with great content, advertisers with new and innovative ways to connect to their desired audiences whilst enhancing the experience of the existing mediums, employees with an inclusive and creative high-performance culture, the country and the communities we operate in with a socially and environmentally responsible corporate citizen.
After many years spent honing his formula of success in business, Lindile decided to share his insights in his book The Young Entrepreneur’s Playbook.

Lisa was appointed to be the Head of Brescia House Senior School in 2004 and served there until 2007 when she moved to take up the position of Head of Kingsmead College, where she has been for the past 15 years.
Lisa’s passion is interacting with people and educating adolescents and she loves to read whenever she can. She loves learning new things and is a firm believer in the growth mindset approach. Her hobbies include playing tennis and gardening.

In between ferrying a bazillion kids around as Mom’s Taxi, Liza started churning out poems for her kids’ school for almost every occasion. Popular demand and playful performances led her towards pursuing her passion for writing, and she now inspires hopeful delight wherever she goes.
She is a mum of three fabulous kids, Hannah, Lucie and Liam. She is married to Ben, and they live on a timber farm near Baynesfield, KwaZulu-Natal.
Liza published her debut book, Potjie Pot Poems, in 2021. Vuvuzela Verses is her second book.

Lorraine Sithole, a reading activist advocating for reading for lifelong enjoyment across all generations, is the Vice-Chairperson of the International Board on Books for Young People South Africa and sits on the board of the African Book Trust responsible for the Johannesburg Literature District. a founder of BookWorms Book Club, a publisher, and writer, Lorraine was longlisted for the 2017 Sol Plaatje European Union Poetry Award and has contributed to these collections – Black Tax: Burden or Ubuntu edited by Niq Mhlongo and When Secrets Become Stories edited by Sue Nyathi. Lorraine was the programme manager for the South African Book Fair for three years, responsible for curating the literary programme and the Schools’ Programme. She is also the Founder and Festival Director of the Gauteng International Book Festival and Chairperson of the International Board on Books for Young People, South Africa (IBBYSA).

Louisa Holst has been a food journalist for over 25 years. She is a freelance food consultant, recipe developer and food editor for Ideas/Idees Magazine. She is also the author of best-selling, The South African Air Fryer Cookbook and is currently working on her second air fryer cookbook. She is passionate about food and loves to cook, discover new flavours and create delicious, easy-to-cook, family friendly recipes.

Louisa Zondo
Louisa Zondo is a lawyer and political activist who has held a number of high-profile roles in public life. She served as Deputy Executive Director of the Constitutional Assembly during South Africa’s transition from apartheid, going on to become Chief Executive of the South African Human Rights Commission in 1996. She has subsequently held a number of senior roles in public and non-profit sector organisations, most recently as Acting Executive Director of Oxfam South Africa. Along with other members of her family, Louisa is currently involved in establishing the Riky Rick Foundation in memory of her son Rikhado Makhado who died in February 2022.

Mathabo Tlali was born and bred in the Eastern Cape and has the yearning to understand and engage the thoughts and realities of others through various artistic and digital platforms. A thespian at heart, she is a practitioner who currently engages the form of contemporary performance in order to translate her ideas; writing, directing, physical performance and producing are her key areas of interest. She is currently completing her second undergraduate major in sociology at Rhodes University, after completing her primary major, drama and performance studies. She seeks to explore intersectional ways of connectivity between the past, present and future, more so pertaining to identity politics within the performance and academic space.
