Read our June 2025 highlights to find out how Youth Day was a big event for our Kingsmead girls, and about student and teacher achievements in academics, arts, sport, and service. From debate tournaments to community outreach, it was a month of learning, reflection, and connection.
We are so proud to celebrate “Tisha” Ntombi Mthethwa, one of our passionate Junior School teachers, who has recently obtained her BA Honours degree in African Languages, with a focus on Linguistics, Literature, and Cultural Studies.
Tisha’s commitment to lifelong learning and her dedication to deepening cultural understanding is a true inspiration to us all. We are so grateful for the impact she makes at Kingsmead every day – well done, Tisha!
Learning never stops, and every step forward is a step toward making a difference.

Our senior school students dressed up as their future careers and it was so inspiring to see the wide range of dreams, passions, and ambitions that each girl carries in her heart. The future is looking bright!
Your dreams are valid, your passion has purpose, and your vision holds endless possibility.
Congratulations to Adiva Tickoo, Valentina Whitcutt, Kristen Benjamin, and Zivanka Chetty, who proudly represented Kingsmead in the debate SACEE Central Division, ranking 4th overall and earning a spot in the SACEE Championship rounds!
Special mention to Adiva, Valentina, and Kristen, who ranked among the Top 20 Best Speakers.
Our Kingsmead Gold team won 3 of their 6 debates in the Championship prelim rounds, showing resilience, teamwork, and passion. While they narrowly missed qualifying for the out-rounds, their commitment and sportsmanship shone through.
Thank you for representing Kingsmead with excellence and heart.

We are thrilled to share this wonderful article by the Mail & Guardian, showcasing the magic of the Kingsmead Book Fair!
Thank you, Mail & Guardian , for highlighting the heart and soul of our event, the vibrant community it brings together, and the love of books that fuels it all – we are grateful for the recognition and support.
A memorable throwback to the spectacular chaos of Noises Off, our sold-out major production that had the audience in stitches!
This play wasn’t just a success on stage – it was a full team effort behind the scenes, too. A massive THANK YOU to Spitfire Customs for creating the incredible custom-built set that brought the play to life.
What a night to remember.
Our second year of PrEDA was once again a roaring success!
On the 8th and 9th of May, we were proud to welcome Radford House, Crawford International Ruimsig, and our adjudicator Sharon Spiegel-Wagner to our Mkwanazi Theatre.
Audiences were treated to an incredible showcase of talent, with five plays that told a variety of compelling stories. Sharon shared valuable feedback, praising the creativity and hard work of each group and the guidance they will carry forward as they prepare for the Festival of Excellence in Dramatic Arts.
A huge thank you to our Dramatic Arts Department for their countless hours of work that make PrEDA such a success.

Happy World Environment Day!
On this day we celebrated our beautiful planet and recommitted to protecting it. From our green campus initiatives to the everyday efforts of our students and staff, we believe that small actions can lead to big change.
Let’s continue to plant seeds of awareness, nurture sustainable habits, and grow a future where people and planet thrive together.
A huge congratulations to Valentina Sanchez, one of three lucky winners in Karri’s Spend, Win, Give competition!
Valentina didn’t just win R1,000 for herself; she also chose to donate R1,000 to a cause close to her heart: Underdogs Pitbull Rescue Centre.
Instead of choosing a well-known organisation, Valentina gave back to a smaller, lesser-known rescue, because her own gentle pitbull has shown her just how misunderstood these dogs can be. Her visit to the centre was filled with love and warmth, and the team was deeply grateful for her donation.
Thank you to all the Kingsmead parents who have already downloaded the Karri app. The app is completely free to download and makes payments for school events and activities easier and safer. Please note: while the Karri Card is available, it is not mandatory.
Well done, Valentina. You’ve inspired us all with your empathy and thoughtful action.

Over the past two weekends, Teagan Sutton-Pryce has wowed the stage in both modern and hip-hop dance categories, and the results speak for themselves.

Even with the chill in the air, our spirit is on fire!
There’s nothing like starting the week with purpose and passion, because when we come together, we rise together.
Let’s go out and WIN!

In June, our Grade 10s met their Grade 6 buddies for the then upcoming High School Experience with roses, hugs, and heartfelt smiles. What a beautiful moment of connection!

Happy International Day of Play!
At Kingsmead College, we believe that play isn’t just fun, it’s fundamental. Whether it’s on the field, in the classroom, or during break time, play fuels creativity, builds connection, and nurtures joyful learning.
Today, we celebrate the power of play to inspire, include, and uplift every child.

We’re taking the Ice Bucket Challenge… for Mental Health!
Lucy, Oprah, and Morgan braved the ice-cold splash on the Garth, not just for fun (though we’re here for the laughs too!), but to spark real conversations about mental health and wellbeing.
The Ice Bucket Challenge, originally started to raise awareness for a neurodegenerative disease called ALS, has resurfaced as a powerful symbol of the mental health struggles many face, often invisible, overwhelming, and misunderstood. The icy shock reminds us just how important it is to check in, speak up, and support one another.
We challenge YOU to join us whether that means getting soaked or simply reaching out to a friend. You never know how much a small act of kindness can mean.
The Masicule Sonke Choir Festival at Rosebank Union Church was a truly magical celebration of choral music and community!
Now in its 5th year, this special festival brought together the incredible voices of Kingsmead College, Roedean Schools, St David’s Marist Inanda, St Andrew’s School For Girls and Brescia House School. Each choir delivered a performance to remember!
It was an evening filled with harmony, heart, and a powerful reminder that choral singing is thriving in our schools and communities. Thank you to everyone who made it so unforgettable.
Happy Father’s Day
A father plays a profound and multifaceted role in a daughter’s life, shaping her confidence, her sense of self, and her expectations in relationships.
He is often a source of security, guidance, and unwavering support.
On this day, we celebrated and honoured not only fathers but all those who fill that vital role with love, intention, and care.
To the dads.
To the grandfathers, uncles, stepdads, and father-figures.
To the moms who are also “Dad.”
To those who have lost, long for, or miss their fathers.
To every caregiver helping a girl grow strong, safe, and seen.
You matter. You are deeply appreciated.
Youth Day – 16 June
On this day, we remember the brave students of 1976 who stood up for justice, equality, and the right to be heard. Their courage echoes through the generations, reminding us that young voices have the power to shape history.
At Kingsmead, we honour this legacy by nurturing young minds to think critically, lead with purpose, and be responsible citizens. Our youth are not just the future – they are the change-makers of today.
To every young person:
May you continue to rise, question, and shine.
Have courage always
And believe in your power. We celebrate your voice.

On Youth Day, some of our Kingsmead debating students had the opportunity to attend an event at the Apartheid Museum.
The day began with a guided walk through the museum, a powerful reminder of South Africa’s complex and painful history. Students had the chance to see significant artefacts, including the inside of a Casspir, and reflect on the courage and sacrifice of the youth of 1976.
Following this, they attended a panel discussion featuring Antoinette Sithole, sister of the late Hector Peterson, and Dr. Tshepo Moloi, Head of History at the University of Johannesburg. The discussion explored the meaning of Youth Day today, the role of young people in shaping a more just and equitable South Africa, and how education can be used as a tool for transformation.
Our students engaged with the speakers, asking questions and reflecting on their own roles as changemakers in today’s society.
This Youth Day experience was a reminder that while youth today face unique challenges, they also hold immense power to lead, inspire and create change.
During a recent Consumer Studies lesson, our Matric students learned about Hypertension and Diabetes in a practical session led by Sister Yolanda from the Kingsmead Clinic.
The students were highly engaged as they explored the meaning and importance of these vital health indicators. Sister Yolanda provided insight into how everyday choices impact overall wellbeing, encouraging students to take ownership of their health.
Each student also had the chance to check their own blood pressure and blood sugar, making the lesson both relevant and empowering. With Matric being a busy and stressful year, it was a reminder of the importance of looking after your body as much as your books!
A big thank you to Sister Yolanda for her expertise and warmth, and to our Consumer Studies department for giving us a glimpse of real-life learning in the classroom.

It’s been just over three weeks since Kingsmead Book Fair 2025, but the energy, inspiration, and conversations sparked that day continue to resonate with our community, especially with our youth.
As we reflect on Youth Day, we are reminded that the Book Fair is more than just a literary celebration. Thank you to every author who made Book Fair 2025 unforgettable. Your words are still echoing in our classrooms and our hearts.
A huge congratulations to Darcy Anderson, who competed in the KWF SA Karate Championship last weekend, a prestigious event running for 25 years!

On Friday, our Junior School students swapped uniforms for PJs in the ultimate Pyjama Day celebration, because sometimes, a little fun is the perfect fuel for learning!
Happy International Fairy Day!
On 24 June, the Kingsmead Junior School celebrated International Fairy Day in the most enchanting way. Our Senior Primary students sprinkled a little fairy dust and shared the magic by reading whimsical fairy tales to our Junior Primary girls.
The Mornington fairies were renovating their little fairy house.
At Kingsmead, we choose to add wonder, imagination, and kindness into everything we do, because a little sparkle can go a long way.
From Broken to Beautiful: A Space for Healing
In honour of Child Protection Week and during Youth Month, the Kingsmead Service Department, in collaboration with the Senior School Art Club, proudly transformed the Kids’ Corner and Victim Support Room at the Rosebank Police Station.
Guided by the theme “Working together to end violence against children,” this initiative created a safe and welcoming space where healing can begin.
Led by Amelia Laburn, and supported by Danielle Wepener, Haaniya Sarang, Olivia Thompson and a team of student volunteers, this project is a testament to the power of compassion, creativity, and community.
“People couldn’t begin their healing… now, they feel welcomed and supported the moment they walk in. You’ve done big, big things.”As shared by Phopi Mnguni, Social Crime Prevention Officer:
A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors who made this possible:
- Angie Chapman
- CS2 Building Projects
- GE Electrical Contractors
- Il Pennello Painting Contractors
- Pentafloor
- Rich Products
- Spitfire
- The Sensory Space
- Tutor Doctor
And our incredible Kingsmead community for your donations of toys, books, therapy tools, and support.
We will continue to restock, support and sustain this space through our Service @ School programme, and we challenge other schools to do the same in their communities.
Together, we can make a lasting difference.
Kingsmead Speed Queen on the rise!
Congratulations to our very own Georgia Lenaerts, who delivered a phenomenal performance at iDube Raceway in Round 3 of the 2025 South African Rotax MAX Challenge.
Georgia powered through the technical KZN circuit to claim 4th overall in the Senior MAX class, with two fourth-place finishes and a sixth, showing true grit as she climbs the championship ladder.
We are so proud of the way you represent Kingsmead both on and off the track.
