Dear Kingsmead Community,
This is one of my favourite weeks in the year – Junior School Book Week and Inquiry Week. One of the many joys of being in the Junior School is the enthusiasm with which the staff and students dress up and embrace the week. I must confess to spending quite a lot of time over the weekend thinking of what I could wear, particularly for book character dress-up day, and I am looking forward to the various characters that we will see around the school.

We also look forward to hosting the annual Kingsmead Book Fair on Saturday – our signature school event and one of my best events on the school calendar. I believe that to host a literary festival that celebrates reading and authors fits in so well with our educational philosophy.
The hosting of the TSSA (Thinking Schools South Africa) international conference last week was an enormous success. The conference showcased our beautiful school, and I received so many compliments from the presenters and the attendees. Our students really did us proud as they greeted and engaged with everyone on campus. Jessica Vance – a presenter from Texas, who is a well-known author and inquiry educator – spoke to me about the wonderful “vibe” that she felt at the school. Hosting this conference again showcased the thinking schools’ philosophy that we apply to our curriculum, and our three staff members who spoke – Sjaneen Pretorius, Tessa Stobie and Yiota Hadjipetros, also did us proud. A special thank you to Sjaneen Pretorius and Saadia Ebrahim for their superb organisation of the two days and to our catering team under Gerry Church; the Marketing team – Carey Fisher-Gietzman, Nyeleti Golele and Ketshedile Dludlu; and Shamila Chiman, who oversaw the logistics of this event.
Purpose, possibility and happiness certainly abound this week, and we can see evidence of these values every day on the campus. I invite you to step into a world of wonder, where “birds of a feather bookmark together.”
Fond regards,
Lisa Palmer

Sports
Welcome back to Term 2! We are excited for another thrilling term filled with sports activities.
We are thrilled to launch the hockey pre-season with a weekly session as we gear up for our upcoming fixtures. It is essential for all hockey players to participate in these sessions to ensure our teams are fully prepared for the season ahead. Please note that the weekly swimming lesson for the Junior Primary is now hockey skills. Students are welcome to bring their hockey sticks, should they have one. This session will only be skills (no tackling); therefore, shin pads and gum guards are not necessary.
Important Reminders:
- Safety First: Participants are required to wear shin pads and a gum guard during sessions.
- Equipment: While we have spare hockey sticks available for those who do not have their own, we highly recommend that students acquire their own stick for fixtures.
We look forward to a fantastic term ahead filled with teamwork and sportsmanship!
