March was Human Rights Month and this was another month filled with kindness, giving and of course, courage at Kingsmead. We celebrated the accomplishments of our fabulous sports teams, as well as our chess champions and our equestrian team. March saw our production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ go live, and the celebration of Women’s Day, where we honoured the hero women at Kingsmead. Read our March 2022 highlights below.

Congratulations to all our swimmers who took part in the Inter Schools Swimming Gala! It was a brilliant morning filled with excitement. Our swimmers showed true Kingsmead Courage and it was an excellent opportunity to experience the competitive side of the sport. Thank you to all staff that were involved in making this a successful swimming season.

On the 8th of March we celebrated International Women’s Day. We celebrated the achievements of women to raise awareness against bias and to inspire and empower us all to take action for equality. Our theme was ‘Break the Bias’ for a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. Together we can forge women’s equality in a world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive – where difference is valued and celebrated.

When the lights go out the show must go on! On opening night of our Major Production performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Load Shedding hit, but the lights did not go out. The audience supported our young performers by shining their own cell phone lights to make sure that the show could indeed, go on. What an encouraging community we have, helping our students to sustain their courage, always.

On the 26th of February 2022 the Kingsmead Checkm8s students represented the Ekhuruleni team in the Chess Inter-regions Tournament (U8-U14). They were up against 5 other regions and we are super proud of their efforts and final results. Well done to all our players on their exceptional performances: Lyla-Jean Barbeli, Milisuthando Mabusela, Nondumiso Mabuza, Talia Sibanda, Zahraa Laher, Viola-Grace Asherson and Malaika Sibanda. A special mention to Lalu Hu-Grobbelaar who finished 4th in the U12 category with a 4 out of 5 game win. Their commendable performances attributed to the region finishing in 2nd place.

Congratulations to all the chess players on their silver medals! We look forward to a great year ahead.

In Earth Sciences, the Grade 4s were exploring the concept of reading food labels. In this activity, they had to measure and compare the amount of sugar found in different food products. Our Grade 5s also had a special activity in their Maths class, where they went on the hunt for right angles and learned to classify them. Great work Grade 4s and 5s!

Last month we were visited by one of the amazing South African children’s book authors, Refiloe Moahloli. Refiloe read two of her books, called “You are loved” and “We are one” to our Grade 1s. It was such a special moment for our students to interact with an author that they’ve been reading about.

Respect Human Rights Kingsmead College

On the 21st of March we commemorated Human Rights Day and the sacrifices that accompanied the struggle for democracy in South Africa. Let us reflect on our progress in the promotion and respect of human rights.

We say a big thank you to the volunteers from Kingsmead College, who assisted with packing 103 maternity packs for vulnerable mothers and babies. These maternity packs are distributed to new mothers who are unable to afford the basic baby care essentials at the time of their baby’s birth. What an incredible day this was for service.
