Kingsmead College, in collaboration with Community Hours, is hosting a Make-and-Donate-a-Sleeping-Bag event on Mandela Day (18 July 2019). Sleeping bags will be made from newspaper and recycled plastic and a handmade scarf will be placed in every sleeping bag. These sleeping bags will be distributed to the homeless.
Schools and visitors are invited to give 67 minutes for Mandela Day to make a sleeping bag and raise awareness for homelessness. Sessions start from 8h00 until 16h00 at Kingsmead College (entrance in Tottenham Avenue). A registration fee of R100 will cover the cost of the material. Teams or individuals are invited to join us on the day. For more information or to book, please email service@kingsmead.co.za.
Make and donate a sleeping bag for your 67 minutes this Mandela Day
Nelson Mandela International Day commemorates the lifetime of service Nelson Mandela gave to South Africa and the world.
Mandela Day calls on us all, every day, to make the world a better place. Each year on 18 July we look back on what has been done, and forward to what will be done.
Making every day a Mandela Day celebrates Madiba’s life and legacy in a sustainable way that will bring about enduring change.
Based on Jo Maxwell’s “Good Night and God Bless” sleeping bag project, we invite you and your friends / colleagues / family to create warm sleeping bags for distribution to those that live rough – on the streets, under bridges, in doorways and on the fringes of our society. Each sleeping bag is lightweight, water resistant and surprisingly warm. The sleeping bags fit an adult – and we have seen times where adults and children or adults and pets climb into the same bag to stay warm and dry. Made from recycled plastic and newspaper, this activity brings warmth and comfort to homeless people.
Imagine how the kindness of a group of concerned volunteers harnessing their resources, time and energy – a world may change in a simple yet significant way and by so doing one person may experience a little warmth.
We encourage you to bring your book club, church group, group of friends, company, or just you on your own and join Kingsmead College and the Community Hours team to make the winter a bit warmer this Mandela Day.
Please register your 67 minute slot at service@kingsmead.co.za. R100 registration fee per person is payable on the day. 67-minute slots start on the hour from 8h00-16h00.
