The beginning of August was busy at Kingsmead College, before we enjoyed our school holidays. We celebrated National Women’s Day on the 9th, as we acknowledged the strength and tenacity of women and their incredible contributions to our society. We also celebrated the accomplishments of our students throughout the month, as our sports teams, debating team and choir went from strength to strength. We announced our junior school partnership with the Club Engage aftercare programme, and the Senior School hosted their Inter-House athletics.
See some of our August 2022 highlights below.
On the 9th of August the Kingsmead remembered the 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria in protest of Apartheid’s unjust pass laws. We wished a happy Women’s Day to all the women in the Kingsmead Community who raise, educate, nurture and inspire us daily. Thank you for all you do.
We are immensely proud of Caitlin Stott, who received her South African colours for water polo, and attended the World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. Congratulations on a fantastic tournament Caitlin!
At the beginning of August we announced our exciting partnership with Club Engage National Aftercare and Holiday Care for our aftercare programme on the school campus. They operate daily until 18:00,
On Sunday 31 July, our Senior School Choir participated in the prestigious Choral Celebration Network Festival at the Linder Auditorium, alongside some of the best choirs in and around Johannesburg. We were thrilled to be included and our choir did not disappoint, receiving enthusiastic applause from an appreciative audience. Thank you to all our choir families and friends for supporting us at this special event!
The Kingsmead Senior Debating team, including Mwamini Bukanga, Elizabeth Hakizimana and Hameeda Malik, recently took part in the SACEE Debating League Finals. Each round was an elimination, meaning only the winning team would progress to the next round. Kingsmead won their semi-final and was set to face Jeppe Boys in the SACEE Developmental League finals. In a very heated debate in which the momentum kept swinging from proposition to opposition, Kingsmead lost the final by the faintest of margins, ending second in the division – a monumental achievement.
In addition, Mwamini ranked ninth, Elizabeth ranked 15th and Hameeda ranked 13th in a pool of more than 160 speakers from more than 10 different schools around the province. Congratulations to to our excellent team of debaters!
We ended the term with a busy week in the Senior School with Inter-House Arts and Inter-House Athletics. Our students certainly earned their break after all the house spirit we saw!
Congratulations to Baker House for winning the Spirit Cup and Kruger House for winning the Athletics Cup.
