Dear Parents, Staff and Girls,

As this is my final newsletter to you, I would like to take the opportunity of expressing my most sincere gratitude to our parent body.  Over the twenty years that I have been at Kingsmead Junior School our parents have, unwaveringly, been supportive of all our endeavours.  When we were building, extending, renovating or establish new facilities and moving our classrooms around in order for our girls to continue their education, our parents stood by us without complaint.  In our educational initiatives we have been so fortunate to have parents who believe in what we are doing and who trust us to continue delivering an education of the highest standard.  We have often depended on the generosity of our parents in upholding our value of ‘service’ to our community.  Thank you for giving so generously of your time, funding and allowing your daughter’s to make our efforts so worthwhile.  I shall miss the wonderful comaradie amongst our parents and I shall, definitely miss your lovely daughters.

Mrs. Cressy had her last treatment on Monday, 3rd April.  We are hoping that Mrs. Cressy will return to school on 5th June.  However, and this is not finite we have asked Mrs. Pruett to remain in this position until the end of June.  Mrs. Jones who has so kindly assisted us in the teaching of Grade 4B this term will be leaving us at the end of the term as Mrs. Brooks returns from her period of leave.  I am sure you join me in wishing Miss Mannie a restful term of long leave.  As communicated to the Grade 1M parents, Mrs. Rait will be taking over the teaching of this Grade One class in the term ahead.  We shall be welcoming Mrs. Goddard into Grade 2K at the start of the second term as well as Miss di Terlizzi as Head of the Senior Primary Phase and Mrs. Lowman, Headmistress of the Junior School.

Mrs. Kaplan, Headmistress of Kingsmead College, joined us at our Senior Primary assembly on Friday, 31st March to announce our 2018 Scholarship winners.  Congratulations to the girls who have been awarded these Scholarships!

Congratulations to Kingsmead’s Scholarship winners for 2018: (left to right) Aadila Babamia (Closed Music), Isabella Gaul (Closed Sport), Robyn Sanderson (Academic Exhibition) and Tamryn Osler (Closed Academic).

We also acknowledged girls who have done exceptionally well in hockey and water polo at our assembly yesterday morning.

Waterpolo – Amy Dickinson, Anne-Marie Sutherland, Meghan Eddison, Natalie Morris, Alison Gace

Hockey – Megan Rogan, Anne-Marie Sutherland, Lily Turvey

Isabella Cockeran has been selected to represent Central Gauteng province at the SA Biathlon Championships in the Paarl on the 8th of April.  Well done Isabella!

As we prepare for Book Fair on 13th May we would like to start collecting ‘gently paged’ books which will be donated to the various schools that we support.  I would appreciate you allowing your daughter to bring books to school; she can place them in the bookcase that Mrs. O’Maker has placed outside classroom X.

Please be reminded that the girls will need to return to school at the start of the second term in their winter school uniform.  Please do not hesitate in contacting the clothing shop if you are in need of uniform items.

I do hope that you enjoy a wonderful Easter Holiday, if you should be travelling please do so safely and return your daughter to school on Wednesday, 3rd May.

Robotics Day  – 1 April

Saturday 1 April Ms Burger hosted an open day for the Junior School girls to engage in various coding and robotics activities. The girls were exposed to:

  • coding Arduinos
  • building worlds in Minecraft
  • working with LEGO Mindstorms
  • and coding Spheros

The energy was palpable as the girls participated in rotational groups and gained experience in solving challenges, competing for chocolates and preparing for external competitions.

Another exciting opportunity for Robotics will be planned for Term Two.

We spent a wonderful afternoon with the children from Rays of Hope this last Saturday at Kingsmead.  Our girls helped the children to write and arrange three letter words onto the correct Circle Map according to the middle sound.  We also played the secret sight word game where the words were only revealed when the children painted the paper with food colouring.  The children ran excitedly around the garden searching for Easter eggs to fill the Easter baskets they had made.  They then presented us with a delightful thank you card for the shoes they had chosen at last month’s get together, this is on display in the library.  The remainder of the time all the children played happily in the garden together.  It is always such a joy to see how easily our own girls and the children from Rays of Hope relate to each other.

Many of the Rays of Hope children started at Sparrow Schools last year and it was encouraging to hear from their carers the huge difference it is making to their learning confidence and they are beginning to achieve success in their schooling.  We are partnering with Sparrow Schools for the Kingsmead Book Fair and the books we are collecting will be going to stock their libraries in the Foundation School and FET College.  If you are clearing out your book shelves this holiday, please remember to keep any books that are still in good condition to donate to Sparrow Schools.

Our annual Kingsmead Book Fair will be held on Saturday 13 May 2017 and is an event not to be missed!  Literary sessions may be booked online through Webtickets or through our onsite, pop-up box office from 27 March 2017.  You are certainly spoiled for choice again this year! To make the selection for the Children’s Area Literary events so much easier, please refer to the link below:

We look forward to sharing our 6th annual signature event with you all.
